How Do You Proclaim A Generational Blessing?

Trees

It is amazing that while there is so much talk and interest about generational curses, there is very little material, discussion and information on generational blessings.

The word blessing in Genesis 28:4 is the Hebrew word berakah, which means, “to pronounce a benediction.” Benediction means, “An expression of good wishes.” 1 The word implies prosperity. 2 Prosperity is, “The condition of being successful or thriving; especially: economic well-being.”

Deuteronomy 21:22-23 says, 22 And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: 23 His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God ;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.

Jesus received and became that curse, so that we might be blessed. Galatians 3:13-14 says, 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

The word “blessing” (the Greek word, eulogia) in Galatians 3:14 means, “fine speaking, elegance of language, to speak well of or to invoke a benediction upon.” 3 Eulogia is actually a compound of two words eu, which means “well,” and logos, which means, “word.” 4

You can see from both the Old and New Testaments that the generational blessing is something that is said, spoken or proclaimed! When you read Genesis 12:2, it literally says, “You will have the power to bless whomever you wish.” 5 That is, you can speak a blessing upon a generation!

A gene is the basic unit of heredity in a living organism . All living things depend on genes. Genes hold the information to build and maintain their cells and pass genetic traits to offspring. 6

A generation is procreated or produced offspring . A generation can be a stage or degree in a succession of natural descent as a grandfather, a father, and the father's son comprise three generations. 7

The Word teaches, first natural, then spiritual (1 Corinthians 15:46). So, just like physical traits (for example, skin color, hair color, eye color, etc.) can be passed down through genes and DNA, immaterial traits (or spiritual traits) can be passed down also through proclaiming “generational blessings.” This is why the Bible teaches us that we

have a spiritual inheritance:

Acts 20:32. And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.

Everything is to reproduce after its kind (for example, Genesis 1:11). God has planted you as a seed in the Earth realm to multiply and reproduce after His kingdom (that is, His way of doing things in Heaven and Earth). So, you have the authority to proclaim generational blessings upon (1) your family and (2) your sphere of influence.

A generational blessing is where a godly, spiritual heritage is passed down from generation to generation (of course it is not automatic; a person must yield to God in order to receive their inheritance). For example, Jonathan Edwards was a committed Christian who married a godly young lady. Some 1,394 descendants of his were traced through genealogical studies. Family records reveal that of the 295 who graduated from college, 13 became college presidents and 65 became college professors. Three were elected as United States senators and three as governors. There was one who became dean of a law school, 100 were lawyers, and 30 were judges. One hundred were missionaries, preachers, or prominent authors, 80 held some form of public office, of whom three were mayors of large cities. One became the comptroller of the U.S. Treasury, 56 practiced as physicians, and one was the dean of a medical school. One became vice-president of the United States and 75 were officers in the military. 8

In closing to pronounce a generational blessing, When you pray and as you pray, put God in remembrance of His Word. Its not that God does not remember what He said; but God honors His Word not your word. Notice that the following sample prayer is all Scripture. Though short, you know it will be effective, because it is the Word of God:

Father, in Jesus name I speak over (name of your family) that they are your

people and the sheep of your pasture. 9 As your sheep, I thank you that (name of your

family) they hear Your voice clearly and the voice of a stranger they will not follow. 10

I praise you Lord, that (name of your children, or children that you know) are

taught of the Lord and great is their peace. 11 Because (name of your children, or

children you know) are the seed of the righteous they do not beg bread. 12

Father, I proclaim that your anointing abides upon (name of your family) from

generation to generation, according to your Word, In Jesus Name, Amen! 13

This week has been a powerful reminder of one of my divine assignments in this season: the role of a spiritual father. I’ve had the joy of sitting with several young ministers, pouring into their lives, encouraging their calling, and helping shape their future. I have two more of those meetings today.
