Take Your Position

Webster’s dictionary defines position as a place where someone or something is located or has been put; a particular way in which someone or something is placed or arranged; put or arrange (someone or something) in a particular place or way.

Being an employee of any company/organization you have been positioned in some shape, form

or fashion. But take the time ask yourself, “Is this a position I chose or was this something created for me by default?” We must take the time to learn more about self and know our position, why the position and is it the right position as it lays the foundation for success.

Speaking of position…I understand there was much preparation that went forth for Super Bowl 2016. There were MANY investments made to make this event a success and to position a company, a team, a product, a service and more at the forefront. I wanted to focus on the positioning of the players on the field. Considering this, I conducted a little research on football positioning, offense and defense.

Offense in football begins a play with the object of earning points. This is accomplished with the making of a touchdown while being afforded several attempts. Scoring can also occur by getting good field position for an attempt at a field goal.

Defense is on point when the opposition is prevented from scoring. Other possibilities for this position include having the ball turned over on downs, interception or recovering a fumble. What I like about defense is that a player can get into position anywhere on his side and perform any legal action to accomplish his goal.

With football, a coach invests time, effort, money, wisdom and more before identifying the true strength of a player. These investments are often conducted before and after recruitment. The player’s strengths are developed and enhanced over time, not over night.

Well we must realize this same approach should be adopted and embraced by us as leaders; however, we must also prepare to play both positions. Regarding offense…there are times when we will need a 1st down, 2nd down, 3rd down and possibly a 4th down before accomplishing a goal. Defense…at times we must aggressively, fearlessly stand up against, block and even tackle everything that comes against making a dream a reality. We need to have and listen to our coaches, advisors, mentors and sponsors to help us as we prepare and/or secure our positions. There will be times when it’s not our turn, we know the ball is not in our hands, despite this fact we still have the opportunity to seize the moment. A popular quote by Bobby Unser, an INDY 500 Auto Racer says, “Success is where preparation and opportunity meet”. The statement supports the reality that we really should be ready to play both positions at all times.

So it is with these same positions, offense and defense that we operate in authority and confidence over every area of our lives while influencing the lives of those around us. Despite what life brings…get in position, know your position, be deliberate about your position and play with great intent to win!
