“Rethink Possible"

There is a fortune 500 company in the United States whose desire was to change the consumer’s view of their image as being a communications company into an image of an innovative one. Launching their new marketing campaign “Rethink Possible” which consists of a collection of intelligence and ideas geared towards helping those of us expand our boundaries into unchartered territory we once labeled as “can’t”.

This new concept would only be beneficial to those who dare to take another look at the capability of something happening or existing that is favorable.

In the book of Numbers Chapter 13, Moses sent twelve spies over into the land of Canaan. He told them that this was the land that God promised the Israelites, and that it would be flowing with milk and honey. They were to check out the enemy to develop battle strategies to defeat them. But ten of the spies came back with a bad report because they saw their enemies as giants and caused the children of Israel to complain about moving forward. However, we know that Joshua and Caleb took a different perspective and saw their enemies as grasshoppers and said that we are “well able” to possess the land. Because Joshua and Caleb relied on their faith in God, entered into the land of milk and honey and prospered where those who lacked faith in God and saw the enemy as giants did not make it. Matthew 17:20 (b) says If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

Just look at all of the pioneers who decided to step out in unchartered territory. When most spoke of the enormousness of the task or the impossibility of the outcome, others, such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Judge Ketanji Jackson and President Barack Obama saw the task as an opportunity for the taking and decided to “Rethink Possible”. What did they all have in common? They had a desire to take “another look” to change perception about a particular image, concept, or practice. It’s like the famous illusion of the Old Lady versus the Young Lady. Is it a drawing of the old lady with a pointed chin, huge nose and scarf tied on her head or the young lady with a feather in her hat showing a side view of her face?

Do you dare to take another look to see things from a different perspective or are you settled with only the first look, first idea, first suggestion or opinion?

This is the start of the month set aside for Black History. If we are to move forward with opportunities and perspectives; we also need to move forward in the things of God and receive his blessings. We must step out on faith to change old perceptions and ideas. That new career, starting or resuming your education, starting businesses are not giants you cannot obtain or overcome, they are within reach to them that believe. Rethink Possible for we are well able to possess whatever we lay our eyes upon. For what God says is for us is for us!

This week has been a powerful reminder of one of my divine assignments in this season: the role of a spiritual father. I’ve had the joy of sitting with several young ministers, pouring into their lives, encouraging their calling, and helping shape their future. I have two more of those meetings today.

It was very difficult to make the decision to put my father on hospice. But when it was needed it was the best decision for him. As a hospice chaplain many people may not understand the care that a hospice program can provide.
